“It is in evidence that the horizontal vulnerability of structural components to gravitational effects requires the strongest answering stratagems. Columns are easy; beams are difficult. Ships’ masts support their boom, not vice versa. The walls and columns of history’s ruins stand the longest. Rarely are the horizontal beams, elevated floorings or roofs to be found intact, if at all, with the exception of domes which combine both horizontal and vertical behaviors progressively translated into mutual synergetical aid and integrated success.”
