“What we wanted to do in making tension members is to get longer and longer and less and less section for a given strength as a reason for increasing the bridges. This always seems to be true in the microscope-- with electrons and protons and all the atomic behavior. . . man is excluded from thinking the way the universe does-- this very efficient way of doing the big cohering tension, and having only local islands of compression.”
