Everybody’s Business:
"I think this town meeting of the air, the audiences here, those of us at the table, really are all of one mind. Humanity is deeply concerned about humanity. But I’ll just point out as an engineer and as one who has operated in the research and advance activities for many, many years that the total community does not invent the telephone, nor the airplane; this is the work of the individual. The individual who finds technically better ways for society finds that what he has is usually not employed until society gets in a very great emergency.
"What we’re really talking about today are human beings themselves. Not weaponry. We’re really talking about human beings; that is our concern… and how will we serve them properly. It’s coming out in the public domain in such an important way. There’s much literacy. Society will in due course find itself in a very emergency.
